Why does weight matter?

It's the focus of so many peoples happiness.

If people gain a few pounds their inconsolable, if they lose a couple they're ecstatic.

And why?

A few pounds either way probably isn't even that noticeable.

So why does it matter?

''Spoiler alert... It doesn't''

When you say you want/need to lose weight, what you probably mean is that you want to lose fat. There are very few circumstances where weight actually matters, and every day life aint one of them.

Because what the number on the scale says is meaningless. It's simply an indication of your relationship to the ground, and nothing else.

So ok. You know you need to lose fat, not weight. But you need to measure progress. So you decide to track your weight?

Even at that, it isn't that useful.

Why?

Because you can lose fat without losing weight.

Because you can lose weight without losing fat.

Weight can fluctuate depending on the time of day, weather or not you had a decent sleep, or even had your morning dump.

Best way to monitor progress: Pick a place with no natural light, pick a time of the week, and take progress photos. Do this week in week out, and after 6 weeks compare, and it'll be pretty obvious whether you've made progress or not.

Now we've established its fat, not weight you're wanting to lose.

We've figured out how to measure your progress.

So how do we go about doing it?

By restricting our calories to the point where we're in a sustainable deficit.

What does that mean?

It means figuring out what your maintenance calories are, and undercutting it without starving yourself. There's a whole bunch of calculators online that can help you do this, but it does require a bit of trial and error.
