Train like a machine

So you go to the gym, and you’re training like a boss? Good. That’s the right attitude to have, as long as you are training like a boss, and not standing there flexing and gawping in the mirror? You don’t? Liar. Haha, we’ve all done it. I tend to do it before a date, go to the gym and do what I can to make myself feel like a badass. Bit of a confidence boost. But the rest of the time, when it’s time to train, and not time to stroke your own fragile ego, then it’s time to train right, like you mean it.

Last week I was writing about functional workouts. About not just training muscle groups, but training your entire body, training it to work together, as one giant, hulking machine. A few of you might have heard of Tabata before? The guys that run my gym regard this almost as the holy grail of functional training. It’s a brutal twenty minute workout that will shake you to your very core, use you up and spit you out. It’ll make you, turn you into a machine.

It works like this. Pick three exercises, for example we’ll choose tire flips, rope climbs and squat thrusts. Its twenty seconds going all out on each one, with ten seconds rest in between, and do that three times. Think you’ll feel dead yet? No? Great. Rest for two minutes, and do another three rounds. Too much? Probably breathing pretty heavily by now, sweating pretty badly, you might even think you can’t go on, but you should. Another three rounds and then that’s you done. If you think you can do a fourth, you haven’t worked hard enough. At the end of that third round, you should feel it in every fibre of your being, but do it twice, three times a week, and you’ll be a machine in no time.
