How to stick to a diet. The 80/20 rule

Everybody as a diet. Some just need a little refining.

We're now quickly approaching month 3 of the year. That's nearly 25% of the year done, and many people will have given up on their fitness goals.

If that's you, then stop it! Don't wait until next year to start again. Start now.

Good.

So sticking to the diet?

Well, when picking or planning a diet, the one, most important thing, that cant be ignored is:

Sustainability

I know. Who would have thought it?

A diet, any diet, will be shit for you if you can't stick to it. Which is where the 80/20 rule comes it.

The 80/20 rule is a rough guide for anyone calorie counting. 80% of your foods should come from single ingredient, nutrient dense, whole foods. The other 20% should come from foods you enjoy. A pack of sweets, a couple of biscuits with your tea, or that fancy Starbucks coffee.

I know that I'd not be able to stick to a diet that didn't allow me to have McVities chocolate and caramel biscuits, because what would be the point in being alive? Right?

Because not allowing the occasional 'treat' into your diet, and as long as this is planned then what's the problem?

Now that doesn't mean you can go out, eat a fuck tonne of poor quality foods and say its flexible dieting. That's not how it works. We still need to track our food, and we still need to stick to our calories for the day. Just because we're going to scran down a doughnut, doesn't mean we can forget about it.

Plan the treats ahead of time.

Every Tuesday, i have a day off, so every Tuesday, I know that I'll have a few (pack) biscuits, or a slice (whole) cake, or something. So i make sure that's logged on MFP first, so I know exactly how many calories i have for the day to play with. And if you go a little over, as long as yore still in a deficit, don't worry too much about it. As long as you maintain a calorie deficit, you'll end up burning fat, and if having the odd treat helps maintain the deficit long term, then thats the important thing.

Because you can still have the things you enjoy. Because you can plan around them, and incorporate them into your week, you'll have created a diet you can stick to. Because creating a diet is more than just eating less to lose a few pounds.
