Getting fitter vs getting leaner

Many people... Most people... Nearly all of people, equate getting leaner with getting fitter.

They see someone walking along the street, reasonably low levels of body fat, instantly assume they're fit. On the flip side, they see someone walking along the street, they have a normal, or slightly higher level of body fat, the assume they're unfit.

But I'm here to tell you that getting leaner does not mean getting fitter.

And allow me to tell you why.

If you're working out, and your goal is simply to get leaner, and lose a few lbs of body fat, your training needs to complement a calorie deficit. It means compound lifts and cardio, coupled with a calorie restricted diet.

Being in a calorie deficit is counter productive if your goal is to become fitter!

If you're just starting out, going from evenings binging chocolate and Netflix, then this doesn't mean you. By starting, and watching what you eat, while going all in at the gym, you will improve your fitness, whilst losing fat, and you'll probably gain some muscle too. You sir/madam are in the best phase of gym.

But if you've been working out for over a year, if you consider yourself with average or above average fitness, and average or below average body fat, then this is for you!

First of all, what is fitness?

Fitness is, in my opinion, simply becoming a faster, stronger, more durable version of yourself. And to improve your levels of fitness, like improving speed or strength, you need to push your body to its limits. And the only way to be able to do this, and improve, is to fuel your body properly. To fill yourself up with calories, macros, and micro-nutrients.

Otherwise, by definition, you're depriving yourself of energy, you're not able to perform at your best, you're going to struggle to improve your best.

And as your body improves, as it becomes more efficient, you'll shed the excess body fat naturally. So don't worry about eating.
